Valkhof Bunker

The Valkhof Bunker is the only remaining machine gun bunker of the three that the German occupiers built on Nijmegen’s Valkhof Hill in 1943. These bunkers were intended to defend the Waal Bridge and its surroundings against the advancing Allied forces.

Fierce fighting took place around the bunker during Operation Market Garden, the largest military operation on Dutch soil during the Second World War. The Allies liberated the Valkhof on 20 September 1944.
